Former po lice detective Adrian Monk (Tony S halhoub), whose photog raphic memory and amazing abi lity to pi ece together tiny clues made him a local legend, has suffered from in tensifi ed obsessive- compulsive dis order and a v ariety of ph obias since the unsolv ed murder of hi s wife, Trudy, in 199 7. Now on psychiat ric leave fro m the San F rancisco Police D epartment and working as a freelanc e detect ive/ co nsultan t on difficult cases, Monk hope s to convi nce his former boss, Captain Leland St ottlemeyer (Ted Levine), to al low him to ret urn to the forc e. Stottl emeyer, who wa vered between a dmiration f or Monk and annoya nce at his ecc entriciti es during the first s eason, is bec oming more of a friend t o Monk as t he series de velops, frequentl y calli ng him in to hel p, as much f or Monk&am p;#39;s be nefit as for his own. Howev er, he know s Monk&a mp;#39;s lim itations a s well as his streng ths and may still har bor doubts a bout the wisdom o f allowing Mon k to car ry a gun or subdue a perpetra tor. Stottlemey er' s second-in-com mand, Lieu tenant Randall Disher (Jason Gray- Stanford), al so seems to be develop ing both adm iration and co mpassio n for t he man he once lab eled &a mp;quot; the defectiv e detective.& amp;quot; Despi te flaws and in adequacies all around, the three are bec oming a n increasingly effective team , with add itional help f rom Mon k's p ersonal ass istant. But in th e tenth epi sode of th e third se ason, S harona wa s replace d by a new assistant, Natali e Teeger (Tra ylor Howa rd). Like S harona, a div orcee wit h a son named Benjy, N atalie is a single pa rent, a widow with a daughter named Julie (Emmy C larke).
