Julian is a 12-y ear-old boy whose fam ily is jus t scrapin g by in the Ruhr indu strial region of Germany in the early 19 60s . When his mothe r and younger s ister go away f or a while, he is left mostly alone in the apartme nt while h is father w orks in the c oal mine.
