Two differences between this Austrian version and the generally available American version are immediately obvious: they di ffer both in their length a nd in the language of the intert itles. The Ame rican version is only 1, 883 metre s long - at 18 fra mes per s econd a differ ence of some 7 minutes to th e Austrian ver sion with 2, 045 met res. Wh ereas we origi nally presum ed only a ne gligible differe nce, result ing from the varying l ength o f the interti tles, a di rect com parison has nevert heless s hown that the Austri an version differs from t he Amer ican ver sion both in th e montage and in the d uration of individual s cenes. Yet how co uld it ha ppen that the later regional distri bution of a canonical US silent fil m was longer t han the & ;quot;or iginal version&qu ot;? The p revalent Ameri can vers ion of Blind Hu sbands does not correspo nd to the version sh own at the premiere o f 1919. Th is little-known fact wa s already pu blished b y Richard Koszarski in 1983. The f ilm was re- released by Univer sal Pictures in 1924, in a version tha t was 1, 365 feet (416 m etres) short er. At 18 fram es per secon d, this amounts to a time differenc e of 20 minutes! & ;quot;Titles w ere alter ed, snippets o f action remove d and at leas t one major sce ne taken out entirely , where von Steuben and Ma rgaret v isit a sm all loca l chapel.& amp;quot; ( Koszarski ) From the present sta te of rese arch we can assume t hat all the k nown Ame rican c opies of th e film derive f rom this sh ortened re-re lease ver sion, a copy of whi ch Universal donated to the Museum of Modern Art in 1941 . Accordi ng to Koszarski the original n egative of the film wa s destroy ed sometim e between 1 956 and 1 961 and ha s therefor e been irretr ievably lost. T his informa tion casts an intere sting light on the Austri an version, which can be dated to th e period betwe en the summer of 1921 and the wi nter of 1922. Furtherm ore, the copy is some 200 metres long er than the US version of 1924. If o ne follows th e detail s given by Richard Kos zarski a nd Arthur Lenn ig, thi s means that, as far as both its date and its lengt h are concer ned, t he Austrian v ersion lies alm ost exactly in the middle b etween the (lost) version shown at the pr emiere and the re-release d one.A la rge part of the addition al length of th e film can be t raced to cut s that were made to the 1924 versi on in almost ev ery shot. Kos zarski descr ibes how the beginning and the end of scenes were tr immed, in order to &a mp;quot;spee d up" the film. However, mor e exciti ng was t he disc overy that th e Austria n version con tains shots t hat are missing i n the America n one - shots/counters hots, intertitles - and furtherm ore shows dif ferences in i ts montage (i.e. the placin g of the indiv idual shot s withi n a sequence) . All this i ndicate s that Die Rac he der Berge c onstitute s the oldest a nd most co mpletely preser ved material of the film.详情
